Different plants have different requirements for photoperiod. Some plants grow better under long-term light (such as wheat, carrots, spinach, etc.), while some are short-day plants and need more dark time (such as chrysanthemums, soybeans, marigolds, etc.).


How much does photoperiod impact on plants? Why do we need to control the light time so precisely?


For plants, photoperiod directly affects their photosynthesis, growth rate, flowering time and may even affect their morphological structure.


Cannabis is a plant that is sensitive to photoperiod. The correct setting of the duration between light and dark has a very large impact on the growth process of cannabis, and even affects the quality and yield of cannabis.

How to Correctly Set the Photoperiod for Cannabis Growth

Seedling Stage

For cannabis in the seedling stage, about 16 to 18 hours of light are needed every day.


At this time, cannabis is in a rapid growth stage. Adequate light can accelerate growth and quickly establish root systems and stem and leaf structures. If the light exposure time is not enough, the growth rate of the seedlings will be significantly slowed down, and they may even become morbid.

Vegetative Stage

When cannabis enters the vegetative stage, we need to simulate long daylight environment in summer and set the light cycle to 18 hours of brightness and 6 hours of darkness to maximize the photosynthesis of the plant and accelerate growth.

Flowering Stage

During the flowering period, growers should set the light cycle to 12 hours of brightness and 12 hours of darkness to simulate the short-daylight environment in autumn. Shortening the light exposure time and extending the dark time can stimulate the plant to produce more flowering hormones and promote the flowering of cannabis.
