How to Maximize Cannabis Yields with the SEA OF GREEN (SOG) Method

 I. What is SEA OF GREEN (SOG)?

SEA OF GREEN (SOG) is a popular cannabis cultivation technique that maximizes yields by growing many small plants in a compact area rather than a few large plants. This method is particularly suitable for indoor growers with limited space and can achieve the maximum yield in a shorter period of time.

With this method, you can cultivate plants closely, allowing only limited growing space and resources for each plant. This layout prompts each cannabis plant to enter the flowering stage quickly, shortening the entire growth cycle.

2. Benefits of using SOG to grow cannabis

  • Suitable for high yields in a small space

  • Shorten planting cycle and quicken harvesting frequency

  • Maximize the use of planting space

  • More efficient use of planting space and light

  • Suitable for vertical and multi-layer planting

  • Best for Indica varieties

3. How to implement SEA OF GREEN (SOG)

1) Get seeds or cuttings

As with any planting process, the first step is to germinate seeds or obtain cuttings to create clones.

Why is it more ideal to choose clones?

Because they are faster than waiting for seeds to flower and can ensure consistency across all plants.

2) Choose the right strain

Indicas are preferred over sativas. They grow shorter and more lush than sativas and have a shorter flowering cycle, making them ideal for the SOG method.

3)Use smaller pots

In the SOG method, you need to use smaller pots, about 4-6 liters, which prevents the plants from growing too tall, forcing them to focus all nutrients and energy on a single main flower and avoid running to the flowers on the side. The pots should be placed closer, with 1-2 plants per square foot, but not too close together to avoid stress from competing for light.

4) Install the grid

Next, you can start installing the grid at the beginning of planting. Plants grown with the SOG method are usually dense and grow quickly, which means they can easily become top-heavy and difficult to maintain stability. Without the support of the grid, they may fall over or even fall over, ultimately affecting your harvest.

5) Growing Phase

Once you enter the growing phase, you will need to place your cannabis under 18 hours of light and 6 hours of complete darkness.

Why do this? Because this maximizes the plant's photosynthesis and promotes rapid growth.

In the SOG method, the growing cycle will be much shorter than the typical normal growing cycle, lasting only 4-6 weeks, and the plants will reach a height of about 10-12 inches.

6) Ensure uniform lighting

As the plants grow, make sure they are uniform in height and all receive uniform light. Choosing the right lighting equipment is very important. VANQ's 1000W cannabis grow light uses 6 LED light bars and a unique lens design to distribute light evenly, making it perfect for the SOG method.

7) Switch to the flowering phase

Once you enter the flowering phase, you will be able to use a lighting scheme of 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness. This lighting scheme will expand the plant's canopy and focus all the energy and nutrients on the "cola".

8) Prune side branches

Once the canopy is formed, you can prune the lower branches. This way, you won't waste energy on those useless side branches. It can not only maintain the beauty of the crown, but also make the plant healthier.

As for these trimmed branches, you can keep them and maybe use them for cloning in the future.

9) Harvest

Next, it's the most exciting moment - harvesting!

How to tell if they are ready to harvest?

When the trichomes of the buds become white and cloudy, they are likely to be mature and ready to harvest.

In the SOG method, although the plants will grow smaller, the yield per square foot is much higher than that of traditional planting methods.

How to Choose the Right Grow Light for Your Plants

Choosing the right grow light is crucial for plant growth. LED lights are energy-efficient and suitable for most plants, offering a full spectrum. HPS lights are ideal for the flowering stage but consume more energy and produce high heat. Fluorescent lights are best for small plants and seedlings. Leafy greens need 12-16 hours of light, succulents require 4 hours of strong light, and cannabis thrives under full-spectrum LED lights for all growth stages.

How to Manage Temperature and Humidity When Growing Cannabis

With South Africa's laws gradually relaxing, adults are now allowed to grow 4-6 plants in private spaces. However, growing high-quality cannabis is no easy task, as it involves many factors, including light, soil characteristics, nutrients, water, and, most importantly, temperature and humidity. Each element plays a crucial role, and even the slightest misstep could significantly reduce your yield.
