LED can Help Plants Grow Better

Posted on Nov 11 , 2020

LED is currently the most powerful light source. They accurately emit bright light of any color, which is energy-efficient and efficient. However, LEDs can not only provide brightness. The light emitted by the LED also has a positive effect on the growth of plants. With LED lighting, indoor plants can grow better and more beautiful.

LED lights can also increase the growth and quality of vegetables, which would otherwise grow sparsely in the greenhouse. Dutch scientists have now discovered that the use of LED lighting can double the vitamin C content in tomatoes.

Proper LED lights can increase the vitamin C content in plants

Tomatoes grown in greenhouses usually don't have enough sunlight. As a result, they cannot grow well, and most crops must be classified. Scientists at Wageningen University in the Netherlands have now studied the effects of LED lights on greenhouse plants. In addition to natural sunlight, you can also use LED lights to illuminate tomatoes in the greenhouse. This not only promotes growth, but also doubles the vitamin C content of illuminated tomatoes. Researchers use special LED lights for illumination.

Give tomatoes an extra dose of light, equivalent to a quarter of the light intensity on a sunny day. Additional lighting can make fruits that must grow in the shadow of the leaves grow better and mature faster. In the future, the research results of the researchers may help reduce tomato waste during harvest while improving the quality of the fruit.

Artificial lighting for indoor plants

Every plant needs light to grow. Plants usually perform best in natural sunlight. However, it is usually not enough. Then, additional artificial lighting can help improve plant growth and quality. However, not all light can bring the desired effect. Plants can only use light in certain spectral ranges (that is, purple-blue and orange-red spectral ranges) for photosynthesis.

In turn, photosynthesis is essential for plant growth. The plant uses the light energy it provides to produce glucose and oxygen from water and carbon dioxide gas (CO2), which urgently needs healthy growth and flower formation. Depending on the type of plant, the need for light can be very different. However, many plants require a lot of light, that is, about 16 hours of light per day. Especially in winter, natural lighting is insufficient.

How to use LED to promote the growth of indoor plants

Plants cannot thrive in low light conditions. Then many plants sprout new shoots, the leaves turn light green, later turn yellow or brown, and finally fall. With suitable LED lighting, you can provide indoor plants with the light needed for healthy growth. However, the spectrum of different light-emitting diodes may vary greatly. Special LEDs for plant growth can accurately provide the correct illuminance required for spectrum and photosynthesis.

Since LEDs produce almost no heat, they can be placed close to plants without damaging them. LEDs are also very energy efficient: they can keep emitting light for a long time, and because of their long service life, they do not need to be replaced frequently. For your plants, additional LED lights mean healthier growth, faster flowering and better quality.

Summary

  • LED lighting can promote plant growth and double the vitamin C content of greenhouse tomatoes

  • Plants use purple and orange-red spectrum for photosynthesis

  • LED lights are characterized by high luminous efficiency, long service life and low heat generation

  • LED lighting makes plants grow faster and more evenly
